Looking for rare and collectible comic books? Whether you are a seasoned collector of Golden Age comics or just starting with some recent back issues, finding the comic you want, when you want it could be a daunting task.

Where to Find Comics

The two best places to find comics are the Internet and the world famous San Diego Comic-Con. Visiting the local comic store is still an option, but your changes of finding that Amazing Spider-Man #1 is slim.

In this article, we’ll focus on how to find comics on the Internet. Specifically, vintage comics that are at least ten years old. In general, comic searches will be focused on ages: Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age and Modern.

Surprisingly, the large search engines, such as Google, are not the best place to look for comics. The results you’ll find will be to dealer sites, but not to their constantly changing inventory. Your search will be focused on the following categories: comic book specific search engines, auction sites, dealer sites, classifieds and forums.

Comic Search Engines

Your best bet for one-stop shopping is a comic book search engine. This type of website will search as many sites on the Internet that it can find and present the compiled results to you without you having to visit multiple sites.

The largest, ComicSeeker.com (http://www.comicseeker.com), is simple to use. You type in the title of the comic you are searching for and the optional issue number. The results are then presented from various sites on the Internet. When you find the comic you want, you go from ComicSeeker.com to the site where the comic book if for sale.

Auction Sites

Ebay. Of course, there are other auction sites out there, but for sheer volume, Ebay (http://www.ebay.com) is the leader. On any given day, there are thousands of comics for you to purchase. If you do buy from Ebay, use caution when selecting a seller and always check their feedback. It is not uncommon for the comic you purchase to be in a lower grade than described. There are honest sellers and feedback is the best way to weed out the bad ones.

There are some comic book specialty auction sites. The largest is Heritage Comics (http://www.heritagecomics.com) based in Texas. You can also bid at Vault Auctions, Hakes and OnlineComicBookAuctions.com.

Dealer Sites

Most of the major and minor comic book dealers now have websites. Some have their own search engine, making it easy for you to search their inventory. Some even let you specify a specific grade that you are searching for. Others aren’t quite as advanced yet and require you to click from page-to-page to look through their inventory.

The largest dealer site isn’t really a dealer, but a consignment/exchange: ComicLink (http://www.comiclink.com). At ComicLink, you will probably find the most active trading of Gold, Silver and Bronze age comics on the Internet.

Classifieds

Comics are not usually sold through online classified sites, but sometimes you can get lucky. As with the auction site category, the classified category is dominated by one major site, Craigslist.

Craigslist (http://www.craigslist.org) operates several local versions, so it is best to stick to searches at your local site as the comic seller may not want to ship to you. Our tip for searching Craigslist is not to search. They have deployed a new technology call RSS/XML. If you have downloaded the Firefox web browser, it is easy to take advante of this technology.

First, go to your local Craigslist and type the term comics in the search box and select the For Sale section. When the results page loads, you will notice a small icon in the right side of the location bar of Firefox. Click this and the feed will now be saved as a Live Bookmark. From now on, you can instantly see all posts at Craigslist with comics in the description.

Forums

Community forums are a great way to buy comics from other comic collectors. Some forums have specific topic areas just for people who are selling comics. However, the best tactic is to simply be active in the forum and keep your want list in your post signature.

Some popular forums are CGC Boards, CBG Extra and About.com Comics.

Conclusion

With so many options on the Internet, it shouldn’t take you long to find the exact comic book you are searching for. By using this multi-tier strategy, you should be able to find multiple copies of the comic you want and purchase based on grade and price. Good luck and have fun.

Smallville fans were more than just excited when it was announced last month that Chloe Sullivan will become part of the Superman comic books in issue number 674. Unfortunately, DC Comics Executive Editor Dan DiDio recently announced that the move from television to comic books isn’t going to happen. Apparently fans were misled and are now out of luck.

“Chloe is an exciting character on the television show, and we had hoped to work her into DC continuity,” DiDio said in a recent conversation with Newsarama.com. “Unfortunately, the stars did not align properly, and even though we had announced it, she will not be appearing in any of the issues of Superman or Action Comics.”

That was all DiDio had to say about Chloe’s sudden disappearing act. It was probably some sort of rights issue, or that Superman writer Kurt Busiek just found no way of incorporating the teenage character into the adult world of Clark Kent. Initially, some fans were disappointed to hear that DC Comics wanted to repurpose the character, as they believed that Chloe’s original traits was what made her memorable and special.

BuddyTV readers also reacted intensely to this issue, as they aired their thoughts through their comments. Gen717 said, “”Whoever this character is they chose to call Chloe in the comics is NOT our Chloe. They are basically going to strip her of everything I love about her, make her a different character and call her Chloe? No, I’m not buying a comic that grossly distorts a character I love. Sorry DC, but what on earth are you thinking?”

cecil44 shared the same sentiments, saying, “I’m actually really really disappointed at the DC version of ‘Chloe’! They want to strip her off everything that makes Chloe Sullivan on Smallville such a special character! There is no way I would buy a comic book that distorts her character like this. The whole reason that Chloe is soo great and soo special is the fact that she’s a reporter first and Clark ’s best friend! But like someone else said, I guess we can’t really know until we see how they will introduce her.”

Well, we won’t be seeing how Kurt Busiek and the DC Comics team will be introducing Chloe, as they already postponed the adaptation. Having seen their plans, Chloe might as well stay inside our television screens.

Over the annals of time there have been people to report on the events that occur in life. The same can be said in the world of comics where the term “comic book news” is readily applied, though is rarely accurate. Much like tabloid news, comic book news is mostly comprised of hype and interviews promoting products.

Take a publication like Wizard Magazine that used to be a fun and credible source of comic book news prior to the widespread use of the internet with comic book news sites cropping up by the dozens. Once reporting hard to find tidbits of information for the curious fan out of touch with the behind the scenes world of comics, Wizard was a bastion of comic book news to the uninformed. Now, however, always a step behind and hardly ever providing any real reporting, according to many, Wizard is highly considered nothing more than an 80-page commercial for products from the biggest comic companies in the industry.

Many comic book news websites are the same, rarely reporting any hard-hitting stories or asking the tough questions in interviews, they cater to the professionals and big companies that in kind provide them with exclusive previews and the like that other sites aren’t able to acquire. The two current biggest comic book news websites, Newsarama.com and ComicBookResources.com have such deals and often publish a lot of fluff. That’s not to say those sites, which are beloved by many a comic fan, do not publish newsworthy content as well, it’s just a little harder to find.

The fact is many comic and non-comic fans scoff at the term “comic book news” passing it off and not considering it real journalism. And that’s an accurate thought pattern when considering some so-called comic book news out there. But it’s certainly not the case in totality. There are, in fact, many real journalists in comic book news that write and publish informative, and sometimes controversial reports and articles on events in comics, about creators, and about publishers.

Therefore, the term “comic book news” is a relative term depending on who you ask and what you read. But rest assured, you can find real stories that would be worthy of any credible publication and would certainly be deemed newsworthy. But like the ‘real world’, you have to sift through all the garbage (ie, tabloids, or fluff) to find the real gems in comic book news.

Collecting comic books is a source of joy for many comic book and graphic novel enthusiasts. However, many collectors have trouble finding comics that they feel would be worth collecting and dont really know what to do with them when they do. There are a number of ways that collectors and comic enthusiasts can find out where to buy, sell and trade collectible comics and other memorabilia.

You can find comic books and other collectable memorabilia in a number of places. Comic conventions are an excellent way to find collectible comics, meet comic insiders and hear the latest comic industry news. One of the best places to find comic books is on the internet. You can find people selling comic books on different websites all over the web. One way to find comic books is in an online market place such as Amazon.com. Ebay is one of the most popular places on the net to find auctions for collectible comic books. Not only can you bid and buy comics but you can also sell your comic books through Ebay as well. Another place to find comics is from an online comic book store such as Things From Another World or SuperHeroStuff.com.

You can also find collectible comic books online in comic collecting forums. One of the sites that I would recommend is Planet Bugle (www.planetbugle.com). Planet Bugle provides a comic forum, a comic wiki, comic news, comic collecting faqs and other information on collecting comic books and more. Comic forums and message boards allow you to connect with other collectors who are selling, buying and trading comic and can provide you with information and insight on collecting comic books.

As you start to accumulate more and more comic you will need to find ways to keep track of your comic book collection. One effective method is to use a database software such as Collectorz.com’s Comic Collector. This will allow you to catalog your comic collection automatically.

Comic books and graphic novels have long captured the imaginations of children, teens and adults everywhere. Many people have read comics when they were kids, occasionally hiding a comic book inside of a school book in order to read it while their teacher lectured. The frequency of which we would enjoy these tales usually decreased the more we grew into adulthood however, they still have a tremendous appeal. Comic books have usually been thought of as nothing more than mere childrens books however, they have come a long way over the years.

Comics and graphic novels address a range of societal issues and allow us to showcase what is happening in the world today. Some comic books act only as plot devices, some as social commentary, and others try to make us think.

Their has been a rise in interest in comics in recent years primarily due to the entertainment industry and the internet. The internet has given people new options for buying, selling and trading comic books with the online marketplace and websites such as Ebay and Amazon.com. Online comic book forums and message boards have also given comic book readers and collectors an instrument through which to connect and share their passion for this creative medium and have piqued interest in those new to comic culture.

Comics are now recognized as a valued medium and we can see their influence in just about every sector of our entertainment. From movies to television and from video games to amusement parks, comics have had a tremendous impact on our culture. As a result comics are no longer being censored in the sense of what should and shouldn’t be in them. This may be a bad thing for some but for others it is a basic part of free speech and the first amendment.

By Daniel Way (Writer), Paco Medina (Pencils), Juan Vlasco (Inks), and Marte Gracia (Colors)

The Story: Cyclops sends Domino to do what she can to keep Deadpool from killing Mr. Kincaid. Meanwhile, Norman Osborn relishes watching the mutant’s situation and does what he can to make it even worse.

What’s Good And What’s Not So Good: I didn’t really mind seeing Deadpool take a back seat to the X-Men last month because of the type of story Daniel Way is telling with “Want You To Want Me.” Way had to set up the situation with Mr. Kincaid and the X-Men, so it made sense to use Deadpool as an obstacle rather than the main character. That same approach doesn’t really work as well in Deadpool #17. While the comic is certainly funny (when Domino comes face to face with her biggest fear, I literally laughed out loud) and Deadpool flavored (Way’s ‘pool dialogue is as humorous as always), the X-Men just simply aren’t as entertaining as Deadpool is. Sure it’s fun to see some of them dragged down to his level and the Norman Osborn stuff is unexpectedly clever, but, as a whole, Deadpool #17 is more entertainingly solid than memorably good.

Simply put, the idea behind the current Deadpool arc is far better than the way it is being executed. Deadpool as walking potential PR disaster for the mutants is a funny, clever way to use the character in a way that fits really well within current Marvel continuity. Instead of focusing on the way Deadpool navigates the situation, however, Way chooses to focus on how the X-Men and Osborn react and deal with Wade Wilson. That is fine and dandy to a point, but when I pick up a Deadpool book I do it to read a story mostly about Deadpool, not the X-Men or Norman Osborn (both the X-Men and Osborn have enough books anyway…Deadpool has just recently started to catch up).

As expected, Deadpool #17 is one slick looking book. Paco Medina and his team do a fine job telling the story and their character work is really strong (thought the focus on Domino’s body is quite obnoxious). While some of the exaggerated expressions are a bit much and a few panels look rushed, as a whole, I’m really happy with the artwork throughout the latest issue of Deadpool.

Conclusion: A little more Deadpool would have gone a long way towards making Deadpool #17 a better comic book. While it’s far from bad, Deadpool #17 isn’t as strong as some of the other issues of Deadpool.

Grade: C+

Making A Living With Comic Book Profits
By Kent Sayre

Many of us have collections. Whether its baseball cards,
porcelain dolls, stamps, rocks, sea shells or ancient art
sculptures, we collect because we enjoy the past time and relish
the thought that our collections may be worth something in
future years. But whether you are still adding to your stamp
collection or if your 1960s baseball card collection is now
collecting dust, comic book collectors are some of the most
die-hard aficionados that will stop at naothing to acquire
vintage issues of Superman and The Flash.

If you dont believe the comic book industry has had an effect
on American culture, a trip to a video rental store or local
theater provides some clarity. The likes of Batman,
Spiderman, X-Men, DareDevil, Elektra, The Punisher,
Hulk, Fantastic Four, Hellboy, The League of
Extraordinary Gentlemen, Hellboy, sequels of several comic
book franchises and the soon-to-be-released Superman Returns,
have brought billions of dollars to the movie industry, making
one thing abundantly clear: The world loves its superheroes.

The comic book collecting industry itself, however, has seen
its highs and lows. Comic book popularity reached a fever pitch
in the 1940s, when superheroes like Batman and Superman flew
on to the scene.

Comic book sales hit its peak in the mid 1980s and 1990s,
thanks in large part to online Web sites like E-Bay and
Amazon.com.

In 1997, however, major comic book players like Marvel and DC
became financially strapped; Marvel was forced to declare
bankruptcy but was able to continue publishing. And while the
comic book market lost much of its steam in the late 90s, many
people attribute Marvels financial woes to their decision to go
to self-distribution, not entirely on lax sales.

Today, comic book sales remain low, but auction sites like eBay
has become the fertile ground comic book enthusiasts
consistently go to for buying and selling comics.

And with the help of the electronic e-guide, you too can make
the most of your collection whether youre buying or selling. In
it, youll learn why now is the perfect time to be in the comic
book collecting business, how one comic book fetched a
quarter-million dollars in 2004, how to buy loads of quality
comics at cheap prices, the best comic book stores, how to keep
your comic books in mint condition (and why mint condition is
so important), how to sell on sites like eBay and Amazon.com,
the comic books you should seek (and the ones you should shun),
